| My name is Ray Abercromby, and when I am not pursuing my career as a tax advisor, I indulge in my passion - wine. This embryonic website is the next step in my mission to educate, entertain, and excite people by talking about wine, and carrying out wine tastings - the ultimate in experience.
I write a bi-monthly newsletter - VineView - in which I write articles, give hints & tips, usually go off on a rant about something, and generally aim to entertain and amuse through my erudite scribblings. In time, these will be posted onto my website, but in the meantime, if you want to receive this (it is free), then please EMail me - my details are at the bottom of the page.
Please note (and this is important) - I do not sell wine. I merely educate and inform. I am more than happy to point you in the direction of wine sources, and other parts of this website explain why. | Why do I do wine tastings?
Apart from the fact that I love standing up in front of people and entertaining them (not hard when alcohol is involved), my main drive is to bring interesting wines to the attention of people.
This is an increasing problem in a world where the supermarkets dominate. Over 80% of wine in the UK is now bought from supermarkets, and this causes a real problem for the myriad small producers around the world. These artisans find that despite the undoubted quality and individuality of their wines, they cannot sell them, as the main route to market is supermarkets, whose demands kill profit margins, and require quantities of industrial levels.
I love choice, and I think that most people do too. Having 200 boring chardonnays does not constitute choice. When did you last enjoy a Portugese red? A crispy Greek white? Some of you may have tried Lebanese wine, but how many know that the UK is starting to make really good wines?
That's what I am about. That's why I do tastings. So if you are interested, or if you agree with me, use me for a wine tasting, or come to one of mine, but most importantly, try out wine merchants. They are the torch bearers of diversity. |
